Matt Kosteniuk

Matt Kosteniuk is a Competition and Development certified coach through Baseball Canada. Matt grew up in Saskatoon and played his minor baseball in the Blue Jays zone. In midget Matt played for the Saskatoon Sundevils and brought home a bronze medal from nationals in 2006. The following year Matt started his coaching career with the bantam AAA Blue Jays at the age of 17. After two years with the Blue Jays Matt moved on to the midget AAA ranks and joined the Saskatoon Diamondbacks as an assistant coach. In 2010 Matt took over the Diamondbacks program full time and developed a year round program that focused on getting players into college programs. Since then the program has sent 15 players to US and Canadian Colleges. Matt is a consistent contributor to the Team Saskatchewan coaching staff and was a part of the silver medal wining 2015 Canada Cup team. Matt also coaches the Saskatoon Baseball Academy that was started in 2014.

Look up, get up, but never give up

“Matt Kosteniuk worked with my son Owen during the winter of 2013/2014 on his baseball development skills. Following the fall baseball program in 2013, Owen began working with Matt to break down his swing mechanics and rebuilt his approach to hitting. Matt was fantastic in his ability to diagnose incorrect motion and flaws in Owen’s swing and helped him develop new habits through repetition and new drills which ultimately helped Owen begin to hit with more power and consistency. In addition Matt helped develop Owen’s changeup and pitching mechanics by doing video analysis and breaking down the motion into smaller segments ultimately helping Own identify where he could achieve more power and control off the mound. His changeup and release point control was highly influenced by Matt’s ability to detect arm motion and respond with positive feedback and accurate advise. I would highly recommend Matt as an instructional one-on-one or team development leader for your player. He loves baseball and it showed for us as Owen thoroughly enjoyed him as an instructor.”

“Matt has been a great coach and mentor for James for a number of years. Matt’s passion for baseball and commitment to creating a learning experience that is challenging and fun has been very rewarding for James and our family. While James’ skills and knowledge of the game have improved significantly under Matt’s direction, we have been most impressed with Matt’s approach to positive and constructive feedback. Matt’s positive teaching skills have enabled James to feel confident under all circumstances at the ball diamond and in life.”

First met Matt Kosteniuk while he and I were on Saskatoon Baseball Council together in 2012. I was immediately struck by Matt’s passion to keep talented baseball players in Saskatoon by giving the players a high level training area. My son, Blake, subsequently attended a series of camps with Matt. Blake enjoyed the high level of skill and commitment Matt and his team brought to the camps, despite the camps being held in a small makeshift baseball space at the Saskatoon Field House. Last winter Blake again attended Matt’s camps, this time at Going Yard. We were so impressed with the space, the set up, and the equipment that we signed Blake up for small group and individual lessons at Going Yard. This past summer not only did we notice a great improvement in Blake’s baseball skills, coaches and other parents were coming up to ask what Blake had done to improve his game, as they too noticed an improvement in Blake, especially in his hitting and pitching skills. While we were very happy to see the advancement in Blake’s skill level, what struck me the most was the increase in Blake’s level of confidence. Thanks to Matt and the beautiful space at Going Yard, Blake has been able to develop skills that have allowed him to play at a higher level, while developing greater confidence in himself and his ability to be competitive at the AAA level.
